April showers and May
flowers.
That’s what Cape May’s
all about in the spring. We even have a festival to honor it called,
appropriately enough, Cape May’s Spring
Festival (April 22-May 1). Some of us who go back a ways remember when it was
called The Tulip Festival – so you get the picture. We’re all about the look,
the look, the look.
It is in spring and at
Christmas that the innkeepers, guesthouse keepers, and hoteliers work their best
magic to transform Cape May into a visual delight.
You can take a tour. One
of the most popular tours is the Secret Garden Tour
co-sponsored by the
Mid-Atlantic Center for the
Arts (MAC) and the
Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May. For more information, call
609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278. But at the time you
are reading this – that tour will most likely be over. So, here’s our advice –
take your own tour.
Cape May is
not a very big town. The historic district is particularly nice because you can
combine a walking tour of the houses as well as the gardens. They do go hand in
hand. Take a stroll down Washington Street and don’t forget about the Washington
Street Mall – the flowers and trees are in bloom there as well.
Try Decatur
Street – The Merion Inn and The Empress are always decked out in their finest florals. Columbia
Avenue and Hughes Street are especially impressive. Don’t forget one
of our oldest streets in Cape May – Jackson Street. Then there’s
Congress Hall
on Beach Avenue and the Chalfonte Hotel on Howard Street and,
and.
This is just one of those things that you have to see and do firsthand. But
