Intricate replicas of landmark Cape May homes and businesses designed from sugar by the students in Chef Annmarie Chelius’ Centerpiece Artistry class in honor of the town’s 400th anniversary were on display at an “open house” held Thursday, May 14 at the Academy of Culinary Arts, Kitchen 3, Atlantic Cape Community College in Mays Landing..
The 18 students in Chef Chelius’ Centerpiece Artistry class planned the“open house” they made from pastillage, an edible sugar paste, for their final project.
The historic landmark town was chosen to coincide with the city’s 400th anniversary celebration of Henry Hudson’s “sail-by” discovery of the the island. Students researched different Cape May establishments, like the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, and presented essays on some of the historical points of interest about their property.
