A banner plane crashed on July 5 at 11:23
a.m. in the water at Broadway Beach in Cape May. Cape May
Police Chief Diane Sorantino said the pilot, Eddy Topper, was
taken to Burdette Tomlin Hospital and appeared to be good
shape. From what she could determine, the plane lost power and
the pilot steered the plane toward to water where the plane
floated for a short while and then sank about 200 yards off
shore. The U.S. Coast Guard and the Marine Police were called
to salvage the plane. The FAA is investigating |

Alex Shey and her friends were in the water when
the plane crashed. "I heard this funny sound and when I looked
up I saw the plane was shaking. We were afraid it was going to
hit us. It was flying so low. Then it landed in the water and
the pilot was standing on top of the plane. The lifeguards and
people on the beach swam out and helped the pilot in."
Gladys Brady who works at the info booth on Broadway
witnessed the scene. "I heard a funny noise and looked out to
see what it was. I saw a plane carrying a letter banner and
its tail dropped down. It was losing power. Then it went down
in the water. It floated for a couple of minutes while the
pilot got out and then it just disappeared. |
