Circumnavigating Cape May – Marathon Swim

September 14:  7 a.mGrace Vanderbyl

Twenty-three swimmers and their accompanying kayakers set out in the brisk waters off Higbee Beach for a 15 mile swim around Cape Island. The marathon took them through the navigation canal, under the two Cape Island bridges into the harbor. They continued past the long jetty at the Coast Guard Training Station, into the ocean, turning along the beach front of Cape May City. Dealing with some strong ocean currents, the swimmers continued past the lighthouse, around Cape May Point and up Delaware Bay to the spot of origin.

The first swimmer in around 1 p.m. was Grace Vanderbyl from California. Swimmers and their Kayak companions continued to come ashore for the next two and a half hours.
