Splash is pleased to being their "Meet the Makers Summer Series" with New Jersey Shore jeweler, Joy Hannan. There will be an artist's reception and trunk show on Saturday, July 1st from 11-1pm. Joy Hannan will bring her latest collection of mermaids and other fantastical beings and perhaps a sailboat or two. Light refreshments will be served. The gallery is located at 513 Carpenter's Lane at the Washington Street Mall in Cape May.
With a BFA in metalsmithing, designer Joy Hannan uses Argentium sterling silver, 14 and 18k gold, and mokume gane to create mermaids, sea turtles, octopi, dolphins and more. Each piece of jewelry is handcrafted by Joy herself. After extensive sketching, she begins by cutting out the intricate shapes with a jeweler's saw, then soldering pieces together, often using sterling silver wire for hair. It is not unusual for her to solder with her oxygen and propane torch up to 50 times on one piece of jewelry. At this point, sometimes gemstones are added to enhance the design. She favors, mostly pearls, opals, amethyst, peridot and blue topaz as these are the colors of the sea. Each piece of jewelry is truly a work of art to wear.
"We love to have our customers meet the makers of the jewelry that we showcase. Joy Hannan is just as magical as the whimsical mermaids and fantastic sea creatures she creates." Explains Hilary Pritchard of Splash. "If you like mermaids, the sea, and sea creatures, you will just love Joy Hannan's jewelry."
