Cape May Designer Show House to open June 21
This year's project, 'Cavalier Cottage,' is new construction located directly across the street from Cape May's Emlen Physick Estate
CAPE MAY - A beautiful, Neo-Victorian home has arisen in Cape May.
After a year's hiatus, Cape May's Designer Show House returns in 2013 for its eighth year with an exciting project that has steadily and majestically transformed the streetscape. The Cavalier Cottage, at 1109 Washington Street, opens its doors to the public on Friday, June 21 as the 2013 Cape May Designer Show House, presented by theMid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and sponsored by South Jersey House & Home magazine.
Nestled on Washington Street directly across from the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington St., the design of the Cavalier Cottage is reminiscent of the Southern Mansion or the Mainstay Inn on a more intimate scale.
The 2,800-square-foot home will feature a 900-square-foot wrap-around porch, as well as a cupola gracing the low-pitched roof. In the Italianate style popular in the 1850s-'70s, the house will feature overhanging eaves with oversized brackets and a gracefully pillared veranda, perfect for sitting and watching the world go by. A custom-made, double mahogany door welcomes visitors to come in and stay awhile.
Inside, a cozy home office overlooks Washington Street, and a spacious family room invites visitors with a fireplace for chilly nights. Outfitted with the latest in appliances, the kitchen will showcase off-white wood cabinetry, a warm wood kitchen island and a beautiful bay window overlooking the back yard gardens. A generous space is shared by the dining area and formal parlor. A sunroom lets in light and a view of the beautiful plantings in the side yard, with plenty of windows to bring the outdoors in. A spacious master suite and two additional bedrooms and bath await on the second floor.
More than a dozen living spaces will spotlight the creativity of local and regional designers, making the 2013 Designer Show House a must-see in Cape May.
Guided and self-guided tours of the Cavalier Cottage will be offered from June 21 through Oct. 31. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $15. Self-guided tours are offered daily from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are offered nightly at 7 p.m. except for Saturdays and July 4, as part of the Designer Show House Dinner Package. Tours of the Designer Show House can be combined with dinner or lunch. Dinner packages are available Sundays through Fridays at 5:30 p.m. with Cape May restaurants ($50). Lunch packages are offered daily starting at 11:30 a.m. with the Carriage House Café & Tearoom ($35) at the Emlen Physick Estate, directly across the street. Tours of the Designer Show House can also be combined with tours of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate. Free parking for the Designer Show House is available on the estate.
Owners Ioanna Iliopulos and Tom Cataldo were married in Cape May in 2002, just a few blocks from where their new home now stands. They knew then that Cape May was the perfect setting for a lifetime of memories. Since then, the couple has returned to vacation here frequently, adding to those wonderful memories during every season of the year. They especially appreciate the fact that even though Cape May is a popular destination for visitors, at heart it is a walkable, livable and enjoyable small town.
"This is the place we want to live and become a part of the community, and be a part of its ongoing historic preservation," Iliopulos said. The couple are members and strong supporters of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC).
"We already feel as though we have roots here," she said, "and have made friends with many others who live here."
Iliopulos and Cataldo plan to move to Cape May permanently once the home is completed and its use as the 2013 Designer Show House is over.
